Today I’m going to show you the 3 things that I think you should avoid doing on social media, to give your business the best chance of succeeding online in 2024
These are things that I have learnt personally or from seeing other mortgage advisers do, that haven’t worked or have actually been detrimental to their online presence!
Ignore the algorithm! ❌
Before we get into the below, I want you to avoid trying find the ‘magic answer’ on social media
Stop thinking that you need to understand the algorithm, work out which songs are trending or find the ‘best’ platform to go ‘viral’ on
No-one truly knows what the algorithm wants. Yes it leaves some clues, but by the time you know what this sneaky little thing is up to, it changes over night 🙄
Now let’s get into the list:
- Avoid trying to gain an audience on every single channel 🫠
Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn X, Tik Tok, Snapchat, BeReal – the list could go on
There are too many social media channels for you to have a big audience on all of them 📱
My advice would be to call up 10 of your ideal clients and ask them point blank:
“Which social media channel do you spend the most time on?”
Put all your engagement focus into that particular channel. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t post on the other channels.
Other channels can be a great verification tool when someone goes searching for you.
But we know your time is precious so why spend time writing witty tweets on Twitter (now known as X) when your clients are all on Facebook?
- Don’t force yourself to do something you don’t like! 🍫🍦
I’ll avoid chocolate ice cream at all costs, it doesn’t do anything for me – this is a conscious choice because I know I’m not a fan! 🤢
So why, when you know deep down that you HATE doing videos, do you force yourself to do them?
This hatred (ok so that’s a strong word maybe dislike) will come across in your videos, and may even put people off reaching out 😟
Instead, play to your strengths; if you prefer to write long form articles, write them as a blog for your website
Or instead of a video you might feel comfortable taking selfies of you at the desk, which you can turn into informative social media posts 🤳
I’m not saying don’t experiment with things you don’t like, try video see how it goes, but don’t put yourself under pressure to do something you don’t feel good doing, as it will show!
- Posting & Ghosting – The absolute worst! 👻
This is by far the worst one I see- putting out a post and then leaving the platform 🤦♀️
It’s a bit selfish to be honest. Posting and expecting everyone else to engage, comment or like your content, when you never do it to theirs! 🤯
Social media channels love when you engage with other content, it actually helps to boost your social media content 🚀
Other local businesses or users pay it back as well. So, if you share or like their post, they’re much more likely to do the same to yours❤️
When you put a post out there make a rule in 2024 that on the same day to engage with other content (especially other local businesses or past clients) for 20 minutes on that day
Little Bonus Tip: There will always be a new social media platform, something shiny (which is now Tik Tok) but remember how strong the older channels are….
Facebook is still the #1 platform that we see mortgage advisers win business on, so start there! If you didn’t see our email about the best social media channel to use you can read it here
Hope you’ve found it useful, let me know how you get on
